The Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly closes

[SEPTIAN]

More than 30 resolutions and decisions were adopted at this year's World Health Assembly in various areas of public health: decisions on diabetes, disability, ending violence against children, eye care, HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections, local drug production, malaria, diseases neglected tropical conditions, non-communicable diseases, nursing and midwifery, oral health, social determinants of health and strategic direction for health and care workers.

In his closing remarks, WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus delegated that the theme of the Assembly was “End this pandemic, prevent the next: build together a healthier, safer and more just world”

"We strongly encourage that cases and deaths continue globally, but it would be a monumental mistake for any country to think the danger has passed," said Dr Tedros urging countries to commit to supporting the target of reaching at least 10% of all countries' populations. at the end of September, and at least 30% by the end of the year.

"One day - hopefully soon - the pandemic will pass, but we will still face the same vulnerabilities that allow a small outbreak to become a global pandemic."

"That's why one recommendation that I believe is most useful for strengthening WHO and global health security is the recommendation for an agreement on pandemic preparedness and response."

Dr Tedros echoed the message that a strong WHO needs to be well funded as it has been strengthened by all the expert reviews reported to this Assembly. Dr Tedros continued Member States to seize this pivotal moment and chart a direction to a financial model.
