Since the first God of War released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, Sony's hack and slash games roam the realms of Greek and, more recently, Norse mythology has become an iconic franchise within the gaming industry. Kratos has become one of the most recognizable characters in video games and the God of War franchise has become a staple of the third-person action genre. However, recent revelations from director David Jaffe suggest that God of Wars' gory action wasn't always intended to be third-person.

God of War is no stranger to changing the formula for long-running franchises, especially in recent games. In the 2018s, God of War saw the franchise take its mythology-themed action in a new direction, shifting its focus from the classic Greek mythology that had guided the series in a Norse mythology-inspired direction. The reinvention also saw Kratos ditch his classic chained swords and rework the overall feel of the game into something more akin to RPGs. Now, David Jaffe has revealed that the original incarnation of God of Wars was meant to be first-person. A recent video on Jaffes YouTube channel revealed that his vision of God of War originally planned to tell his story based on Greek myths directly through the eyes of the mighty Kratos. According to Jaffe, the game's first-person perspective was inspired by his experience playing a first-person shooter called Maken X on the Dreamcast.

However, according to Jaffe, problems with how the God of Wars story would be presented eventually led to the idea being shelved even before it was presented to the game programmer, Tim Moss.

Jaffe goes on to cite how he felt that a first-person perspective could not represent the proper emotion behind the God of Wars story through a first-person perspective. The first God of War game would eventually switch to a third-person style that is said to be inspired by games like Devil May Cry and Ico. Jaffe also references various other aspects of God of Wars development throughout the video, explaining how systems like quick-time events and escalation systems were inspired by other games.

With the God of War franchise gearing up for its next release in God of War: Ragnarok, fans believe that more major changes are coming for the long-running action franchise. The game director's comments suggest that the end of the franchise's Norse saga may end with the possible death of either Kratos or Atreus. Santa Monica Studio has also shared several pieces of concept art for the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok showcasing new content and regions. While God of War may have changed significantly from David Jaffes' original vision for the game, the franchise's success as a third-person certainly speaks for itself.
